How Exning Remembered The World Wars
In 2014 the whole country commemorated the start of WWI
We held in a number of events in Exning.
These are recorded in a book of photos etc in St Martin’s Church
August 3rd: Exning Remembers WWI
On the War Memorial in Exning are the names of 80 servicemen who lost their lives in the 1st World War. The 100th anniversary of the declaration of war was marked by the Exning Branch of the Royal British Legion in conjunction with St Martin’s Church. An evening of words and music was held, during which the names of those villagers who paid the ultimate sacrifice were remembered. A narrative took the audience on a journey through the years 1914 until 1918 with poems by the famous war poets, Siegfried Sassoon, Rupert Brooke, Wilfred Owen, Isaac Rosenberg and Laurence Binyon with appropriate music played by the Newmarket Town Band.
November 8th afternoon: Exning Enlistment Re-
We remembered and honoured all 302 men those who served in World War One as recorded on the Exning “Rolls of Honour” and War Memorial. 100 relatives of those men, current residents in their homes or other villagers walked from the homes to Exning Primary School where they signed a specially prepared “Enlistment Book”, marched of to “war” and returned, some mentally scarred, some physically wounded and some not at all.
November 8th evening: MBC World War One Sing-
and "The Last Post" (Music, Readings and Poetry)
On the evening of Saturday November 8th, Exning based ‘Music Builds Communities’ held an evening to commemorate the centenary of the start of World War One.

The second half saw the Last Post played on a variety of instruments. Between each musical item there was a reading or poem reflecting the Great War, with many of them having a local connection.
November 9th: Remembrance at the War Memorial
The ceremony at the village War Memorial started at 10.50am and was led by John Saville. Wreaths were laid and standard bearers from the Royal British Legion were in attendance. During the short service the two minutes silence was observed marked by a bugler playing the Last Post and Reveille.
November 9th: Royal British Legion Service of Remembrance in St Martin’s Church
Following the ceremony at the village War Memorial, a Service of Remembrance was held in St Martin’s Church starting approximately at 11.15am. During the service the Royal British Legion standards were laid on the altar and a wreath laid at the Church’s War Memorial. The address was given by the Reverend Peter Gill. The Newmarket Town Band provided the music for the occasion and played the Last Post and Reveille to mark the two minutes silence.
EXNING REMEMBERED WORLD WAR ONE
World War II – VE Day 75th Anniversary May 8, 2020
Due to “Lockdown” restrictions due to the Covid 19 Pandemic there were no specific celebrations in the village. People marked the event with flags and bunting. Some photos can be seen here
