VE Day – 80 Years On     May 8, 2025

VE80 was celebrated in a quiet way in Exning. A few people met at the war memorial for quiet reflection, laying a wreath.

We remembered those men of Exning who made the ultimate sacrifice in the European theatre, with a brief recollection of where they served, died and were buried.

BARRETT James William aged 30 Bombardier 143 Fd Regt, Royal Artillery

died from drinking contaminated liquid whilst overseas

BOWMAN Ronald Jack aged 29 Private 1 st Bn The Royal East Kent Regt

(The Buffs) assumed Killed in Action at Florence, Italy.

CLOVER Stanley George aged 30 Able Seaman H.M.S.Barham, a 31,100 ton

battleship, that was torpedoed by 4 torpedoes

simultaneously, causing the ship to roll on its side in

2 ½ minutes before exploding. 862 died and 396

survived No Known Grave


LISTER Arthur aged 24 Sergeant (pilot) Royal Air Force No. 1 Air

Armament School Killed on a bombing training flight

on the ranges off the Lincolnshire coast when 2

Blenheim bombers collided. Buried in Exning Old

Cemetery.


ROYS Sidney aged 35 Gunner 73 rd Anti Tank Regt. Royal Artillery

Killed in Action at El Alamein No Known Grave.

TALBOT Frederick James aged 27 Private 2 nd Bn Beds & Herts Regt Killed in

Action at Monte Cassino Buried in Cassino War

WALKER Gerald Borland aged 30 Major 4 th County of London Yeomanry. RAC

Died of his wounds Buried at Kantara Memorial

Cemetery Egypt east of the Suez Canal.

WEBB John Thomas aged 26 Gunner Royal Horse Artillery “B” Bty 11 th

Honourable Artillery Company wounded at El Alamein

Died of his wounds Buried in Tel el Kebir Memorial

Two of the civilians named on the memorial were killed due to enemy action when

the hotel in Western Super Mare in which they were staying was bombed.. They

were William Tatum 1 st Baron Glanely, and his chauffeur Frederick Danner.

Leslie Fuller was killed while working in the White Hart Hotel when Newmarket

High Street as bombed.

The names not mentioned here died in the Far East where the war with Japan did

not end until 15 th August.

They will be remembered on VJ Day
